5th Occasional Miller Beer Tasting Contest

And the winner was... Pete Gafner!! This was Uncle Pete's first beer taste-off, and he won with 8 of 10 correct, edging past my 7. The rest of the pack was far behind. Craig, Amy, and Bill, all former winners, were nowhere close. Bill claimed his cold affected his palate. Several people got one or zero right. This clearly means we all need to practice a lot before the next contest. Dad, Eric, Joe, and Emily, I expect better scores from you next time around!

For those of you who haven't participated, the beer contest works like this: A list of 10 beers is posted for everyone to see. You get a mini-pour (2-3 oz) of each beer, one at a time. You have to finish that beer before the next one is served, so you don't have the chance to compare them against each other. (This is not about drunkenness, by the way - it takes a long time to go through all 10 rounds.) For each beer, you write down which of the 10 you think it is, rate it on a 1-to-10 scale, comment about why you liked/disliked it, and then compare it to the theme. This year's theme was weddings, in honor of Steve and Patty's, of course. Example comment: "This beer is slightly bitter, like a 5th time bridesmaid who spent $250 on a dress she hates to stand up for a woman she doesn't even like that much." (Previous themes have included celebrities and olympic events.)

After all 10 beers are served, we go around the table and everyone reads their guess and comments about each beer, and then we find out what the beer actually was. One point for each correct beer. Steve got to the house in perfect time to judge the comments. We judged them differently (and better) than normal - Steve announced his favorite 3 for each round, then awarded one point to the best comment. Separate winners are announced for comments and for beer identification, though the beer is really the critical one for bragging rights.

The group's highest ratings went to the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, though only a handful of us correctly identified it. The other 9 were:
  • Star Hill Amber Ale
  • Founders Rye PA
  • Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA
  • Lost Coast Stout
  • Holy Mackerel Imperial Black Ale w/Pomegranate
  • Magic Hat Circus Boy Hefeweizen
  • Victory Prima Pilsner
  • Yuengling Lager
  • Victory Golden Monkey Tripel Ale
Mom, Mary, and Aunt Deb served - Trisha wasn't around to sabotage Craig's game by spiking his beers with Five O'Clock vodka like she did at the 3rd occasional tasting.

Good times, fam. See you all for the next go-round. Thanksgiving??

Next Up - The Great American Road Trip!

Dear reader - and here I'm speaking primarily to myself, as I'm writing mainly to document these memories for my own future enjoyment - I must apologize. I barely captured anything here about our Costa Rica trip in summer 2024, and nothing at all about our two weeks in Prague and Vienna in 2025. Maybe someday I'll catch up, but in the meantime, let's forge ahead! This summer we're staying in the US. Time for a nearly 6-week long road trip! Why now? Ruth will be a senior in high school next year, so this might (?) be the last time we can all do such a long trip together. Bill quit his job in April (yay for FIRE, aka Financial Independence / Retire Early... but that's a whole separate post), so we've got this short window where we all have the time freedom to do it.  Here's the plan: Leg 1 - Raleigh west to Denver. We'll visit Asheville, Chattanooga, Huntsville, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, and Great Sand Dunes National Park along the...

Alaska Day 8 - Wasilla

The second to last day of our trip, we had a relaxed travel day back south with the goal of ending up somewhere near enough to Anchorage for us to turn in the RV on time the next morning. Jim did some fishing (no luck), we had a leisurely breakfast in our boondocked RV, and wondered when exactly a huge moose pooped so close to our RV during the night.  Fishing by our boondocked RV We didn't have a campground reserved for the night, but knowing that Anchorage campgrounds are primarily super expensive parking lots, we decided to stop 45 mins north in Wasilla. The city might be best known as the hometown of Sarah Palin, and it was covered with Palin signs. We later learned that Alaska was holding elections this Tuesday (Palin lost). In more entertaining news, Wasilla is also home to the Iditarod Headquarters and Museum. The Iditarod is a long-distance sled dog race covering over 900 miles in 8+ days. The headquarters had dog houses but no dogs visible during our visit, so we looked ar...
