Day 6-7: Oklahoma City & Amarillo

So quickly I’ve stopped posting updates! Thank goodness we’ve been writing updates daily in our “Trip Bible”, the folder with pages for each day with all our travel confirmation numbers, hotel addresses, etc. - everything we might need if we have no cell service, a not infrequent case in mountains or ranch lands. In the trip bible, we wrote planned itineraries for some days, or at least options of things we may want to do, so we’re updating that as we go with final activities, notes, and memories.

Given that I’m over a week behind at this point, I’m switching to placeholder bullet points in an attempt to catch up a bit. I’m telling myself I’ll update these later with more detail.

Alma:
  • Stopped on the way to OK City in this city’s Popeye Park for a picnic lunch. “Spinach City.”
  • This small town is adorable! Zillions of flowers and other plants lining the streets downtown.

Oklahoma City:
  • Stayed in Bricktown, cute area with a little river walk.
  • Hot afternoon (90s again) so we cooled down inside after check-in. Bill & girls played basketball in the pool while I exercised.
  • Walked over to the river for dinner at a Mexican place, then over to a candy shop where the girls picked out a ton of gummies. Final stop at Bricktown Brewery for a 6 pack of local beer before heading back to hotel.
  • Disaster here! Ruth dropped her phone and the screen was only black after that, even though the phone seemed to still be working. Ordered a replacement to arrive in CO at Joe’s a few days later, where Ruth eventually figured out how to get through the MFA process for the new phone setup by clicking in what seemed to be the right spots on the broken phone to login and approve the new phone login request. Hooray!
  • Next day, walked to the Oklahoma City Underground, a series of connected tunnels under the city. They’re decorated with art by local artists and history of the area. Nice and cool down here!
  • This popped us out by the OKC bombing memorial. Beautiful park here, but we didn’t stay long because it was hot and we had no water. Not a pleasant walk back to the hotel for Zadie.
  • Drive to Amarillo through flat, flat OK & TX - tons of windmills everywhere. Cows huddled under trees for shade or wading in ponds.

Amarillo:
  • Saw our first prairie dogs of the trip behind our hotel!
  • First Buc-ee’s stop for most of us - crazy. Got some dessert and some souvenirs for the girls.
  • Visited “Bug Ranch” and “Cadillac Ranch” where cars buried half underground are all spray painted.

Next Up - The Great American Road Trip!

Dear reader - and here I'm speaking primarily to myself, as I'm writing mainly to document these memories for my own future enjoyment - I must apologize. I barely captured anything here about our Costa Rica trip in summer 2024, and nothing at all about our two weeks in Prague and Vienna in 2025. Maybe someday I'll catch up, but in the meantime, let's forge ahead! This summer we're staying in the US. Time for a nearly 6-week long road trip! Why now? Ruth will be a senior in high school next year, so this might (?) be the last time we can all do such a long trip together. Bill quit his job in April (yay for FIRE, aka Financial Independence / Retire Early... but that's a whole separate post), so we've got this short window where we all have the time freedom to do it.  Here's the plan: Leg 1 - Raleigh west to Denver. We'll visit Asheville, Chattanooga, Huntsville, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, and Great Sand Dunes National Park along the...

Wall and shower (?!) paint

Last post, I mentioned that we'd painted the walls, so here are finally some pics. The color was pre-selected for us: we found this teal on one of the three layers of walls that we demoed. Bill installed a fan in the wall above the window, which got new trim to match the rest of the house. He also put in two recessed lights in the ceiling, a medicine cabinet, and a light over the cabinet. In the pics below, you'll see only the top half of the wall painted, since the bottom half will have white beadboard. The last picture shows the shower area, painted in a crazy "liquid rubber" waterproofing goo (ShowerSeal). Here's hoping that works.

Floor repairs, before & after

Downstairs, the air return is moved from the middle of the entryway floor (weird!) to under the staircase. Upstairs, a weird area was patched with reclaimed heart pine.
