Kitchen project begins

Pre-demo, pre-tornado, we started with this. Cabinets that are soft from years of moisture. Stove with 2 working burners. Three layers of kitchen floor (parquet over tile over wood). Several layers of wall. Windows that don't quite separate the inside from the outside. More on the interesting things we found in the walls soon. For now, let's focus on the starting point:

Back wall: Sink will move under this window, dishwasher to the right. Ceilings throughout will go up a foot (pending structural engineer and plumbers signing off on that plan).
Wall to the right: Stove will move between these two existing windows, with a wall-mounted hood over the stove. The windows themselves will be closed off - the weird placing otherwise blocks off a lot of upper cabinet storage space.

Looking toward the dining room, this doorway will be widened quite a bit, to about 5 feet. No more wall cabinets here.

On the other side of the room, the fridge will move to the space where the sink and dishwasher are currently. The wall here will mostly go away. The white wall in the background will be extended so the current pantry/creepy hall is walled off to a separate laundry room.

Let's go!

Alaska Day 8 - Wasilla

The second to last day of our trip, we had a relaxed travel day back south with the goal of ending up somewhere near enough to Anchorage for us to turn in the RV on time the next morning. Jim did some fishing (no luck), we had a leisurely breakfast in our boondocked RV, and wondered when exactly a huge moose pooped so close to our RV during the night.  Fishing by our boondocked RV We didn't have a campground reserved for the night, but knowing that Anchorage campgrounds are primarily super expensive parking lots, we decided to stop 45 mins north in Wasilla. The city might be best known as the hometown of Sarah Palin, and it was covered with Palin signs. We later learned that Alaska was holding elections this Tuesday (Palin lost). In more entertaining news, Wasilla is also home to the Iditarod Headquarters and Museum. The Iditarod is a long-distance sled dog race covering over 900 miles in 8+ days. The headquarters had dog houses but no dogs visible during our visit, so we looked ar...

Can't believe it

We were all excited this week to finish the nursery. After finishing the final coat on the trim, we removed the blue painters tape from the walls. Sheets of the wall paint came off with the tape. In all the years we've been painting, I've never seen that before. Maybe related to the humidity when we were painting? The trim itself is fine, but we've got a LOT of touch-ups to do this weekend. Hopefully scraping, sanding, and touch-up paint will do the trick.
